Children’s GP Care At Every Stage Of Growth

Children’s healthcare needs can change quickly as they grow. Some families need support for newborn feeding, sleep, growth, or post-birth questions. Others may need regular check-ups, vaccinations, school readiness reviews, or help managing common illnesses and ongoing health concerns.

At Meroo Street Family Practice, our GPs provide care for children from newborns to teens. We welcome early visits for new parents who want to discuss feeding, sleep, growth, and post-birth questions, as well as ongoing care for children and adolescents as their health needs change over time.

What Our Children’s Healthcare Services Can Include:

General GP Care For Babies, Children, And Teens

Our GPs assess and manage a wide range of common childhood health concerns, from general illnesses and routine health issues to ongoing concerns that may need regular follow-up. Having a local GP for your child can make it easier to access continuity of care as their health needs change over time. We support children with everything from common illnesses to ongoing concerns and more complex health needs.

Childhood Immunisations

We provide routine childhood immunisations in line with the National Immunisation Program, helping protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases. We can also help with catch-up immunisations if a child has missed doses or recently moved to Australia.

Growth And Developmental Monitoring

Regular child health checks can help monitor growth, development, and milestone progress over time. These appointments can also help identify when extra support or referral may be useful. We provide regular check-ups to assess growth and developmental milestones, with support and referrals where needed.

School Readiness And Milestone Reviews

As children get older, health checks can also support school readiness by looking at areas such as speech, movement, behaviour, learning, and general development. These reviews can be especially helpful around four years of age, with referrals available if extra support is needed.

Nutrition And Healthy Habit Support

Healthy growth also depends on nutrition, sleep, physical activity, and everyday routines. Our team can provide practical guidance to help support your child’s long-term health and wellbeing, including advice on healthy eating and physical wellbeing.

Early Identification And Intervention

Early review of symptoms, growth patterns, behaviour, or development may help families get support sooner. Early assessment can help identify potential health concerns and guide timely advice, management, and referral where needed.

Support For Ongoing Childhood Health Concerns

hildren may also need ongoing GP support for conditions such as allergies, asthma, or eczema. Your GP can assess symptoms, provide a management plan, and coordinate referrals to allied health or paediatric specialists when appropriate.

Routine Child Health Checks And When To Book

Routine child health checks can help monitor growth, development, and general wellbeing as your child grows. NSW child health records recommend checks at birth, 1–4 weeks, 6–8 weeks, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years, 3 years, and 4 years. These visits can also be used to review development and vaccinations.

You may also want to book an appointment if your child:

  • is due for a vaccination
  • needs a growth or developmental review
  • has a fever or ongoing illness
  • needs support with asthma, allergies, or eczema
  • is preparing for school and you want a general check-up

Babies under 3 months with a temperature of 38°C or higher should be assessed urgently at hospital. Other children with fever should see a GP if symptoms last more than three days, they seem very unwell, are dehydrated, have a rash, or you are worried.

What To Bring To Your Child’s Appointment

To help us provide the best possible care, please bring your child’s Medicare card and their NSW Blue Book (My Personal Health Record) where available. Bringing the Blue Book can help keep growth, development, and vaccine records up to date during visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What paediatric care do you offer?

We provide GP care for babies, children and adolescents—including regular health checks, growth and developmental reviews, immunisations and common childhood illness care. Please see current availability with reception.

What ages do you see?

All ages from newborns to teens. New parents are welcome to book early visits to discuss feeding, sleep, growth and post-birth questions.

When should my child have routine health checks?

NSW’s child health record recommends checks at birth, 1–4 weeks, 6–8 weeks, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years, 3 years and 4 years. We use these visits to review growth, development and vaccinations.

What should I bring to a paediatric appointment?

Please bring your child’s Medicare card and their “Blue Book” (My Personal Health Record) so we can update growth, development and vaccine records. If you’ve misplaced it, NSW Health can help you obtain a new copy.

Which vaccines are due—and when?

We follow the Australian National Immunisation Program (NIP). The current schedule (updated 26 June 2025; page refreshed 1 September 2025) shows the vaccine timing for each age group. Ask us if your child needs catch-up vaccines.

Do you do catch-up immunisations?

Yes. If your child has missed doses or recently moved to Australia, we can create a catch-up plan based on the NIP and your child’s history.

My child has a fever—when should we see a doctor?

See a GP if fever lasts more than 3 days, your child is very unwell, has a rash, is dehydrated or you’re worried. Babies under 3 months with a temperature ≥38 °C should be assessed urgently at hospital.

Do you check development and school readiness?

Yes. At scheduled checks—especially around 4 years—we look at speech, movement, behaviour and learning, and can refer for extra support if needed. Please bring the Blue Book.

Can you help with allergies, asthma or eczema?

Yes. Your GP can assess symptoms, provide a management plan and coordinate referrals to allied health or paediatric specialists when appropriate. (General guidance aligned with paediatric primary-care practice.)

How do I book and what are your hours and fees?

You can book by phone or online. We’re a mixed-billing practice—some services may be bulk billed; otherwise a gap fee can apply. Please check current hours and fees with reception.
